Are we consuming more content than what we ideally should?

We are currently living in a world where having a Netflix and Amazon Prime subscription is a must. You can instantly become “cool” if you have watched F.R.I.E.N.D.S or Game of Thrones. In schools, web series and stand-up comedy specials occupy a considerable portion of children’s conversation. Students are on their phone viewing memes the whole day. We basically are living for consuming content most of the time and when we are not, we are talking about the content that we have consumed.

If I am being honest, I myself was a big consumer of content. I watched web series, youtube videos and vlogs, stand-up comedy and what not. For a good amount of time, the first thing I used to do after coming back from school was to open my phone and start watching videos of my favourite vlogger, Casey Neistat. Moreover, I also used to watch the same movie again and again. I have watched many movies such as 3 Idiots, Taare Zameen Par, Air Force One multiple times. Added to that I have watched the entire series of the show “House M.D.” which consists of 8 seasons twice! To say the least, I am not quite happy with what I have done. It might have seemed cool watching hours of content everyday but now I realise what tomfoolery I have done.I still watch content but it it has gone down if we compare it to the amount I used to watch 3 months ago.I have now started trying to devote more of my time towards more productive things. I have started reading more novels, writing articles and of course recently I have started posting on my blog regularly. I believe watching and consuming content is an addiction and it is a bad one and is not limited to me. I think at least 70% of my schoolmates are addicted to gobbling up content.

I am not at all saying that we should not watch stand-ups or movies. I agree that they are an excellent source of entertainment and pleasure(Pleasure and entertainment too are components of life!). But the problem arises when swallowing up content is what we start doing day and night.(This is what happened to me some time ago)We think nothing but of watching the latest videos and movies.Everything else takes a backseat be it studying, playing some sport or socialising with people.I obviously have no right to talk about socialising for I barely start any conversations! However the topic regarding socialising is better to be left for another day.

Now is reading novels and books also consuming content? Of course it is!Obviously its great to read books for it does improve your language skills and vocabulary. However reading books without doing anything else the entire day is harmful too. You won’t be able to do anything productive if you keep on consuming content the entire day be it even reading books. You may argue if it is improving your langauge what’s wrong in reading novels the entire day.(This is what I thought when I became addicted to reading.Going off topic but my personal favourite book series is the Percy Jackson Series and I used to love the Secret Seven series when i was younger ).Coming back to the topic, my answer to that is if you keep reading books the entire day, when will you have time to showcase the skills you have acquired through reading?

So, don’t consume content excessively.I’ve learnt this the hard way for I wasted some months of my life and I hope I act as an example for you to stop consuming material.

The mentality regarding career streams in India

“Take Sciences. The commerce and humanities streams are only for failures” These are the words of the parents of a typical middle class home in India. So the aspiring architects are forced to become engineers and those who dream of becoming actors are forced to become doctors.

Now, why do parents and the society around us think sciences is the only stream meant for “intelligent” students? They think that only doctors and engineers can earn good money and others struggle to even find jobs. This is a mentality that does not allow India to produce good artists, entrepreneurs and architects.Obviously there is a reason that no Indian film has won an oscar yet. Nor has any Indian won Nobel Prize for literature since Rabindranath Tagore.

I am going to quote an example here which shows that how the society decides what will a child do in the future. I have a friend who was a budding cricket player. Now the society filled all sorts of things in this kid’s mind that sportspersons can’t be successful in India. Now that the society has scared him, my friend has chosen to take Sciences. Though I do agree that there is indeed some corruption in the sports arena in India, but nobody can stop the best players to show their talent and compete internationally. If you’re one of the best in your field, no one can stop you from earning recognition worldwide. But the typical Indian society simply does not understand this fact. What I want to tell them is that there are engineers who are driving taxis and there are doctors who are unemployed and there are freelancers earning millions. So choosing a certain stream doesn’t ensure success. It is your passion and drive that can ensure that you become successful.

So when I announced that I was going to take up Commerce stream, my friends were shocked! They think that those who get good grades can’t take up commerce or humanities stream and vice-versa.The people around them have shaped their opinions in such a way that they have started thinking that one stream is better than the other. This then creates a vicious cycle as such children will grow up to tell their kids the same thing. Another stereotype prevalent in the society is that boys can’t take up humanities. In this era of modernity, such thinking is still present in the society. We talk about how men and women are equal, then why do we as a society think in such a way! It is an important issue to ponder upon

Another opinion of the elders around us is that parents should decide their children’s future. According to them, parents should choose their children’s careers. They think that children are supposedly not mature enough to decide for themselves. I tell such people, maturity does not only depend on age . Moreover, myriad of times parents do not know what is their ward’s passion. So how can they decide for their child. Parents should understand that its their child’s life and not their own. I am not saying that they should not guide their children but what I am saying is that they should not force their children to accept their opinion.

So to all those students who still have to decide their stream, don’t succumb under the pressure of the society and do what you like.Don’t care about the comments of negative and stereotypical people around you. Don’t stop the society from preventing you from doing what you like. Just believe in yourself and do whatever your want to but put your heart into your work. You may end up being the boss of the most intelligent kids in your school.

My hatred towards “Tuition”

In India, we have a trend of going to tuitions along with going to school and I am totally against it.

When I see 4th graders going to tuitions I wonder is the syllabus of 4th so hard! Personally, I have never gone to any tuitions and I still get decent grades. So all those parents who think without tuitions their child can’t get good marks, I am sorry but I have to burst your bubble and tell you that your thinking is totally wrong! If tuitions were so good, everyone going to tuitions would get excellent grades which is not the case in most situations!

Now, why are tuitions so bad? Tuitions are organized loot where children’s parents pay the tuition teacher to teach what they are being taught in school. Now there are some people who say that they go to tuitions for a better understanding of topics. I tell them that they are paying the school they are going to money for teaching them. It is their right to ask their teachers whatever question they have in their minds. There is no need to go to tuitions when your query can be answered in the school itself. Even if they don’t like the way that they are being taught in school, they have the internet. The Internet can tell you much more than what your tuition teacher can tell you.

Now, some people tell me that they use tuitions as a way to “socialize”. So basically what they are doing is paying money to make new friends! You can socialize in parks, online, playing sports but using tuitions as a way to socialize is a very queer and impractical idea to me.

Not only are tuitions a waste of time, but they are also a waste of money as well. It takes on average 10 minutes to reach your tuition and 10 minutes to come back home from your tuition. Added to this is the cost of petrol that is used in vehicles. This cost might seem small in the small run, but if we look at the larger picture, say 5-7 years, this cost would come out to be huge.

If the students have already studied what is being taught in the class in their tuitions, they create a nuisance in the class not allowing those who have not studied to learn. This forces the other students to join tuition as well creating a vicious cycle. Such students who disturb the class think that they know what is being taught, they can do anything going to limits of even forgetting moral values. I ask them if they are dependent on tuitions for education, where are their manners? Education if just not studies, also include basic moral values.

I would recommend you to use this tuition money elsewhere. Use it to learn new skills. Put it in fixed deposits or other funds where you will actually get something worthwhile in return unlike tuitions

I have nothing against tuition teachers. I agree they also work for their money but I am against this whole system of tuitions.Tuitions are just a tool to waste money and time. Try self-study and I guarantee you that you would feel having much more time to learn new things besides studies and would get much more leisure time

Have people become too judgemental and insensitive?

Have people become too judgemental?Have people become insensitive these days? The short answer is yes

Let me allow to explain myself using examples from my own life.People who know me but aren’t that close to me think that I am a serious, studious and a quiet human being. They dont’t try to understand me but form opinions that as this guy gets good grades,he would be studious.People nowadays go to any limit to crack jokes not think about those being affected. A person asked me at a party,”Why have you come to this party?Don’t you have to study?” This is the thinking of the people of this generation and then we talk about thinking modern.People who know me understand that I am a lively guy who plays Basketball, video games, reads novels and likes to go out with friends to movies or parties. But to others since I supposedly get good grades, I am not allowed to enjoy and am just supposed to study. According to me, if we compare the hours spent studying for exams, I would not even be in the top 50% of that list.Again people who are superficially aware of who I am are going to accuse me of lying but the truth would not change. When i confront people that I don’t study as much as they think I do,they say,”Then how do you get grades?”My answer to that is that acquiring knowledge is not about how much you study but the way you study. One thing I pride myself for is that I study not for grades but for knowldege.

Let’s take some other examples which shows the hypocrisy of the society.

Let’s talk about the recent event of the decriminalisation of Section 377 which prohibited same-sex marriage in India.Obviously it is a great step taken towards equality and freedom. But people have started cracking jokes like if they have heard that section 377 has been decriminalised and have started cracking jokes regarding this matter. Not only is this is an insult to the person they are talking to but also to the members of the LGBT community who are still fighting for their rights in many countries. And when they are asked if they support the LGBT community, they readily say Yes.I ask such people to take one stance. What you preach should be what you do.You just cannot support a thing along with showing it in a bad light. Granted that you have the freedom of speech and expression but it also is your duty not to abuse it.

Then there are the pseudo-feminists. I respect feminism and I fully support this movement for equal rights and status for men and women. I also agree that there are still hundreds of places where women are treated inferior to men.But some women nowadays have started treating men as if they are inferior to them.Recently I was reading on Quora that there was an incident that an old man was forced to give up his seat to a young lady in a public bus as that lady asked the man to give up his seat on the account that he was a man and she was a woman. Now the man initially refused to give up his seat but once he was forced by the lady and other people in the bus who thought the women to be the victim, he had to give in. I can obviously not guarantee that this story is true(But I feel it to be),but I am quite sure such incidents are happening in the country.I want to tell such psuedo-femininsts that feminism is a struggle for equal right for both sexes,it is not a struggle for superior rights for women over men.

I hope after reading this, if you are guilty of any of the above , would understand what wrong were you doing and try to bring a change in yourself.
